Dear Doctor,

I operate a quaint little business specializing in repairing vintage model trains. Some of these trains are quite old and considered collectibles, so they require top-notch protection during transit. The trains can reach up to 100 cm in length and must be packed flat. My biggest challenge is finding boxes that perfectly fit the trains without leaving too much space inside. Long, narrow boxes are hard to come by!

Do you know if Kite offers any suitable packaging options?

Thank you, Roland

Hi Roland,

I understand your predicament—long and narrow boxes are indeed scarce because there isn't a high demand for them in most industries. However, when dealing with fragile antiques like your trains, it’s crucial to prioritize protection over convenience. A standard box might not be the ideal solution here since snug-fitting packaging is essential to minimize the risk of damage during transit.

To start, wrap each train thoroughly in high-quality bubble wrap. For added security, consider using bubble wrap bags (435mm in length) on both sides of the train and securing them with strong adhesive tape. Next, create custom protective enclosures using single-wall corrugated cardboard sheets. These sheets are flexible enough to be scored and folded around the train or cut into sections and taped together to form a snug fit. Make sure to label your package with "FRAGILE" tape if it's being shipped through third-party carriers, as this serves as a clear warning to handlers about the delicate nature of the contents.

In addition, consider reinforcing the edges of the package with extra layers of cardboard to prevent bending or crushing. You may also want to add padding material like foam inserts to further stabilize the train within its makeshift box. Remember, the goal is to eliminate any unnecessary movement inside the packaging.

Finally, always double-check that your packaging meets industry standards for shipping fragile items. This includes ensuring proper cushioning, secure closure, and clear labeling to avoid mishandling.

Best wishes,
