IAFP 2022 Focused on Food Safety in the City of Bridges

The IAFP 2022 Conference took place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Steel City, from July 31st to August 3rd. Over 3,000 food safety professionals from around the world gathered to share insights and explore cutting-edge science and technology related to food safety and sanitation. Despite ongoing global challenges such as the pandemic and the Russo-Ukrainian War, the event was filled with optimism and a shared commitment to improving global health and food security. Dr. Lucia Anelich delivered the Ivan Parkin Lecture with a powerful theme titled “Out of Africa,” emphasizing the importance of including Africa in the global food safety movement. Her talk highlighted the establishment of a continental food safety agency for African nations in June 2021, marking a significant step toward food security on the continent. Key sessions included the “Food Safety by Design” symposium, where Deb Smith, Vikan’s global hygiene expert, discussed how food facilities can meet new GFSI Hygienic Design requirements. Other notable discussions covered equipment replacement strategies, environmental monitoring for low-moisture foods, data-driven sanitation chemistry, and the role of cleaning in surface disinfection. Frank Yiannas of the FDA celebrated the second anniversary of the New Era of Smarter Food Safety initiative, highlighting the critical role of data in advancing food safety. Sandra Eskin of USDA announced that Salmonella would be classified as an adulterant in breaded and stuffed chicken products, a major regulatory shift. Remco and Vikan also presented research on JFP articles from 2017–2022, which received positive feedback from industry leaders. The conference concluded with Dr. Katherine Swanson’s John H. Silliker Lecture, where she urged attendees to embrace diverse perspectives for better food safety outcomes. The next IAFP Conference will take place in Toronto, Canada, from July 16–19, 2023. As a leading provider of FDA-compliant, color-coded cleaning tools, Remco and Vikan have consistently supported the food safety community through exhibitions and collaborations.
