Vikan - the story behind the name

In celebration of Vikan’s 125th anniversary, we are taking a look back into our history to uncover the stories that have shaped who we are today. This blog post is part of a series that highlights key moments and themes from our journey, offering insight into the values and legacy that continue to define our company. When A.P. Pedersen founded what would later become known as Vikan in 1898, the company was originally called Skive Børstefabrik, which translates to “Skive Brush Factory.” The name came from the small Danish town of Skive, located in the heart of farmland. Back then, branding wasn’t a priority — what mattered most was that customers knew exactly what they were getting when they walked into the shop. During the 1920s, A.P. Pedersen’s brush business was growing rapidly, with increasing sales across Denmark. He acquired a patent for a unique scrubbing brush that featured an iron fitting allowing it to be turned around. This innovation meant that when one side of the bristles wore down, users could simply flip the brush and continue using the OTHER side. To promote this invention, the patent holder created a sticker with a drawing of a cleaning lady and a brush, along with the phrase “Vi kan,” meaning “We can” in Danish. The message emphasized the power of combining human effort with the right tools for optimal results. A.P. Pedersen used the leftover stickers on his brushes, and thus, the name “Vikan” was born — though it remained largely forgotten for some time. After World War II, A.P. Pedersen’s sons, Gunnar and Carl Wilhelm, took over the factory and began exporting brushes to countries like the UK, Finland, and Germany. However, the original name, Skive Børstefabrik, proved difficult for non-Danish speakers to pronounce or remember. As a result, the Vikan brand slowly gained recognition, and by the 1950s, the name was becoming more widely associated with the products than the factory itself. In 1956, when the company moved to a new factory, the Vikan name was proudly displayed on the building’s gable. Despite this, the official company name remained “Vikan A/S – Skive Børstefabrik” until 1997. Even now, locals in Skive still refer to the company as “børstefabrikken,” or “the brush factory.” The core idea behind the Vikan name — that the right combination of manual effort and the best cleaning tools leads to the best results — has remained central to our philosophy. Today, we continue to believe that effective cleaning requires not just high-quality tools, but also the right amount of human skill, time, and care. Our long-standing expertise in hygienic cleaning tools and our commitment to innovation are a testament to our rich history. As we celebrate 125 years, we remain dedicated to the same principles that guided us from the very beginning. **Recent Blog Posts:** - **What’s in a brush?** Discover how the materials used in our brushes have evolved over the past 125 years and how they reflect our ongoing commitment to quality and innovation. - **The origins of Vikan’s approach to innovation** Explore the early days of the company through the eyes of its founder, A.P.
