Dear Doctor,

I operate a niche business specializing in repairing antique model trains. Some of these trains are quite large, measuring up to 1 meter in length, and they must be transported flat. My biggest challenge is finding appropriately sized boxes that can accommodate these trains without causing any damage during transit. Long and narrow boxes are hard to come by, and it seems like every packaging supplier I contact doesn't stock what I need. Do you happen to know of any suppliers who might have what I'm looking for? I would greatly appreciate any advice you could offer.

Thank you in advance,

Roland

Good day, Roland,

Thank you for reaching out with your packaging dilemma. While it's true that long and narrow boxes are not commonly available due to low demand, there are alternative solutions that may better suit your needs. Antique items like your model trains require maximum protection to prevent damage during shipping. Using a box alone might not provide enough stability, especially for fragile antiques.

Here’s what I recommend: Start by carefully wrapping each train in heavy-duty bubble wrap. This will provide cushioning and help absorb shocks during transport. You can also use a bubble wrap envelope or sleeve specifically designed for longer items to further protect the train. Secure the bubble wrap with packing tape to ensure it stays in place throughout shipment.

Next, instead of searching for pre-made boxes, consider creating custom packaging using corrugated cardboard sheets. These sheets are flexible and can be easily cut to size. For instance, you can score and fold a single sheet around the train to form a snug enclosure. Alternatively, cut the cardboard into panels and assemble them around the train before securing everything with strong adhesive tape. If you’re sending packages through a courier service, make sure to label your package with "FRAGILE" tape to alert handlers about the contents' delicacy.

In addition, adding internal supports—such as foam inserts or additional layers of padding—can help stabilize the train inside its protective casing. This step ensures that the item remains stationary and avoids unnecessary movement during transit.

I hope these suggestions help alleviate some of your concerns. Remember, when dealing with valuable antiques, prevention is always better than repair. Let me know if you encounter any more issues along the way!

Warm regards,

The Packaging Doctor
