Promote Independent Innovation and Technology to Support the Development of Physical Fitness

**Promoting Independent Innovation and Technology to Drive the Development of Sports and Fitness** *Date: March 13, 2015, 09:31* The Ministry of Science and Technology has been actively working to support the construction of a well-off society and a strong sports nation. In collaboration with the State Sports General Administration, it has focused on enhancing scientific and technological support in three key areas: competitive sports, mass sports, and the sports industry. This includes fostering independent innovation, strengthening scientific research capabilities, and accelerating the application of sports-related technological achievements. During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the Ministry launched key technology research projects aimed at achieving breakthroughs in China’s competitive sports, particularly in areas where the country holds a potential advantage. It also supported research for the development of winter sports, preparing for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics by providing technical assistance. These efforts have helped improve performance and competitiveness in international competitions. In addition, the Ministry has consistently emphasized the importance of science and technology in implementing the National Fitness Program. It has supported initiatives to enhance public health and establish a comprehensive national fitness service system. In 2012, under the Twelfth Five-Year Science and Technology Support Program, the Ministry organized research and application of key technologies for promoting physical fitness and developing expert guidance systems. These projects involved 14 research institutes and universities, laying the groundwork for nationwide sampling and the launch of scientific fitness demonstration areas in 2014. Furthermore, the Ministry has promoted the establishment of strategic alliances led by major companies like Taishan Sports Industry Group and the China Federation of Sporting Goods Industry. These alliances focus on technological innovation in public sports facilities and fitness equipment manufacturing, and they have been recognized as part of the national industrial technology innovation strategy. In 2014, the State Council issued "Some Opinions on Accelerating the Development of the Sports Industry and Promoting Sports Consumption." The Ministry of Science and Technology worked closely with the State Sports General Administration to assess the technological needs of the sports sector and develop implementation plans accordingly. Looking ahead, in 2015, the Ministry will continue to strengthen collaboration with the State Sports General Administration and other relevant departments. It will conduct special strategic studies to identify major scientific and technological needs across competitive sports, national fitness, and the sports industry during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. By integrating sports services, products, and supporting technologies into high-tech fields, the Ministry aims to ensure that these innovations are effectively supported and implemented. Through improved management of science and technology programs, the Ministry will encourage qualified sports companies and research institutions to participate in sports-related R&D projects. It will also focus on the efficient application and promotion of existing sports science and technology achievements, ensuring that the benefits of these advancements reach the public and contribute to national health and well-being.
