In 2015, Qinghai Province launched a significant initiative to promote national fitness by opening large sports venues for free or at low cost. This move aimed to encourage more people to engage in physical activities and improve public health. As part of this effort, the government invested substantial resources to ensure that these facilities were accessible to all citizens.
Starting from late last year, major sports centers across the province began offering free access to the public. The Qinghai Sports Center in Chenghai Lake was among the first to implement this policy, and it quickly became a popular destination for locals seeking exercise and recreation. Despite being located far from the city center, the facility remained bustling with visitors on weekdays, showing strong public interest.
During a recent visit, the reporter observed a high level of activity at the center. Indoor courts were fully occupied, with many people waiting outside for their turn. Children were playing on trampolines, while others enjoyed swimming in the crowded pool. The gymnasium also saw a steady flow of individuals playing football and other sports. The atmosphere was lively, reflecting the positive impact of free access to sports facilities.
The provincial sports bureau reported that over 37 new gymnasiums and 28 stadiums at or above the county level had been established. These facilities are now open to the public, with many offering free or subsidized services. To support this initiative, the government allocated 37.48 million yuan in subsidies to ensure that these venues could operate effectively.
Under the new regulations, sports venues must be open for at least 35 hours per week, with extended hours on holidays and during school breaks. Outdoor equipment and facilities are available daily for at least 12 hours. Additionally, each stadium is required to host public events and training sessions throughout the year.
To prevent misuse or hidden fees, the provincial sports bureau has increased oversight. Venues are required to display clear information about service charges and operating hours, both online and on-site. This transparency helps ensure that the public receives the full benefits of the program.
While the initiative has been successful, challenges remain. Many stadiums still struggle with funding and management. However, the government’s investment and ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and efficiency suggest a promising future for public sports facilities in Qinghai.
By making sports resources more accessible, the province is not only promoting fitness but also fostering a healthier and more active community. With continued support and effective management, these facilities can become key pillars of public well-being and social development.
