Packaging differences lead to price changes

[China Packaging Network News] The variation in prices for the same product is often attributed to packaging, which can sometimes be a misleading perception. One of the most noticeable aspects is the price difference in food packaging.
Ms. Yu, who recently bought a pack of instant noodles at a supermarket, noticed this trend. She observed that the same braised beef noodles cost 2.5 yuan when sold in a bag, but 4 yuan when boxed—making it 1.5 yuan more expensive. According to her, “It’s probably just the box that’s driving up the price.†A visit to several supermarkets confirmed that similar differences exist across various products. For instance, a brand of Danish cookies comes in two versions: a carton package with 163 grams priced at 16.5 yuan, and an iron box containing 200 grams priced at 32 yuan.
The question arises: how much does the packaging material contribute to the price difference? A supermarket employee explained that tin boxes are more expensive than cartons, so even if the net weight is similar, the price varies significantly. “I’d definitely go for the carton version,†said one customer. “It’s the same product, so why pay more for the packaging?â€
Beyond materials, other factors also influence pricing. For example, bulk or bundled packages are often cheaper than individual ones. A set of five noodle packs might cost less than buying them separately. If you use the same product regularly, opting for a bundle could save money. In the case of instant noodles, some brands offer better value in bulk. A 100-gram pack of noodle cakes, for example, costs about 12.2 yuan for five units, making each pack only 2.44 yuan.
Luxury packaging and high-end products have a significant impact on pricing. This is especially evident in the tea market, where excessive packaging has long been a concern. However, recent trends show a shift toward more rational pricing.
This year, the market for Longjing tea appears more reasonable compared to previous years. It’s rare to see spring tea priced over 10,000 yuan. Some tea merchants report that the overall market has become more balanced, with consumer-grade Pu'er tea prices dropping by around 30%. The focus is now shifting towards quality and brand reputation rather than extravagant packaging.
After the Qingming Festival, fresh Longjing tea has started to appear in the market. A recent visit to the city’s tea industry revealed that this year’s prices are more moderate than in the past two years. Expensive “million-yuan†teas and overly luxurious packaging have become less common.
Although Longjing from West Lake remains scarce due to low production, its price hasn’t dropped significantly. This year, the price in Hangzhou’s Longjing area is around 8,000 yuan per catty, while in other producing areas like Qiantang, it’s approximately 2,000 yuan per catty.
Recently, a news story claiming that “Daipu’s price dropped by 50%†spread widely on WeChat. While the manufacturer denied the claim, it still sparked discussions in the industry about potential price reductions in Pu'er tea.
Since last year, consumer-oriented Pu'er tea has seen a downward trend, with some varieties dropping by about 30%. However, high-value collectible Pu'er teas have actually increased in price by around 10%. This shows that the market is gradually becoming more transparent and rational.
