One lamp can make all the difference

One Lamp Can Transform a Space

The journey of Secto Design began when its founder, Tuula Jusélius, met Seppo Koho, a budding architect and designer, during his student years at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. The university had just launched a matchmaking initiative to connect young designers with established brands. Intrigued by the idea, Jusélius posted an advertisement seeking talent, receiving eight applications. Among the applicants, she selected Seppo Koho as one of three candidates for an interview. The following morning, Koho called Jusélius, explaining how he had spent the entire night sketching an entire collection of furniture designs. His dedication sealed the deal, and since then, Koho has been the sole designer for Secto Design.

Over the years, the partnership between Secto Design and Seppo Koho has proven resilient, weathering the ever-changing tides of design trends. "Seppo's creativity knows no bounds," says Jusélius. Unlike many companies that chase fleeting trends, Secto Design focuses on creating timeless pieces—designs that transcend generations. Collaborating exclusively with Koho has ensured consistency across their product line, fostering a distinctive style that speaks volumes about their brand identity. Initially, they anticipated their aesthetic would resonate most with Japanese and Finnish audiences, but the global appeal of their lamps quickly became evident. Today, a Secto lamp looks equally at home in a luxurious Middle Eastern palace or a modern bookstore in São Paulo.

Jusélius doesn't hesitate when asked about the best-selling lamp. "It has to be Octo," she says confidently, sharing a personal anecdote from her summer cottage. She placed the first Octo shade atop her sofa table while working nearby. "Every time I took a break to reflect, my eyes were naturally drawn to the lamp," she recalls. Koho's philosophy centers on creating soft, diffused lighting rather than harsh, direct beams. This approach results in a calming ambiance, perfect for concentration. "Perhaps the secret lies in their harmonious design," muses Jusélius, "like magnets drawing your gaze naturally."

Secto Design lamps are celebrated not just for their appearance but for the atmosphere they create. They strike a perfect balance between functionality and ambiance, transforming spaces into inviting sanctuaries. "For Seppo, lamps aren't merely utilitarian objects," explains Jusélius. "As an architect, he approaches design with a unique perspective, envisioning each piece as part of a larger spatial experience." Every lamp shade Koho designs carries this architectural essence, forming a 'space within a space.' They're both striking and subtle, resembling cozy cocoons that effortlessly blend into their surroundings. The birch shades demand attention yet remain unobtrusive, embodying the perfect balance of form and function.
