One lamp can make all the difference
One Lamp Can Transform a Space
The story of Secto Design begins with its founder, Tuula Jusélius, who first encountered Finnish architect and designer Seppo Koho while he was still a student at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. The school had recently introduced a matchmaking initiative aimed at connecting promising young designers with established companies. Intrigued by this idea, Jusélius put out an advertisement seeking a talented young designer. From the eight applications she received, she selected Seppo Koho as one of three candidates for an interview. That evening, Koho called Jusélius to share his sleepless night—he had spent hours sketching an entire collection of furniture designs. This dedication sealed the deal, and since then, Seppo Koho has been the sole designer for Secto Design.

The partnership between Jusélius and Koho has stood the test of time, enduring through changing trends and challenges. "Seppo has endless ideas," Jusélius notes, "enough to keep us inspired for years." Secto Design focuses on creating timeless pieces rather than chasing fleeting trends. Collaborating exclusively with Koho has allowed the company to maintain a consistent aesthetic across its product line. Their shared vision and understanding of each other's strengths have resulted in a cohesive and distinctive style. Initially, they hoped their designs would resonate with Japanese and Finnish audiences, but the brand quickly gained global recognition. Today, Secto lamps are equally at home in a Middle Eastern palace or a Brazilian bookstore.

When asked about their best-selling product, Jusélius doesn't hesitate. "It has to be Octo," she says with a smile, sharing a personal anecdote about using the lamp at her summer cottage. She placed the first Octo shade on her sofa table while working nearby. "Every time I took a break, my gaze would naturally drift to the lamp," she recalls. Koho's philosophy emphasizes creating soft, diffused lighting that enhances concentration without straining the eyes. The subtle oval shape and calming glow of the Octo shade provide the perfect ambiance for focus and relaxation. "That's the magic of our shades," muses Jusélius, "they draw you in like a magnet of tranquility."

Secto Design lamps are cherished for the atmosphere they create. These lamps transform spaces into inviting sanctuaries where objects and emotions harmonize beautifully. "For Seppo, lamps aren't merely functional—they're architectural expressions," explains Jusélius. Each shade Koho designs embodies this spatial quality, acting as a space within a space. They feel both protective and striking, blending seamlessly into any environment while maintaining their unique presence. The birch shades, with their organic curves, demand attention yet effortlessly adapt to their surroundings, embodying the essence of adaptive design.
