Research on furniture modulus

The study of the relationships between furniture and its components is essential in understanding how different elements interact. The modulus plays a key role in this process, serving at least three main functions: defining the overall size of the product, determining the dimensions of individual parts, and guiding the selection of materials, hardware, and construction methods. Modulus can be categorized into several types:
(1) **Basic Modulus**: This refers to the fundamental unit selected from the product's modular series, often used as a reference for other dimensions.
(2) **Combined or Expanded Modulus**: This involves combining smaller modules to create larger ones, allowing for greater flexibility in design.
(3) **Split or Partial Modulus**: This is used when a module needs to be divided into smaller segments for specific applications.
(4) **Material Modulus**: It defines the most suitable way to apply material sizes, ensuring efficient production and processing.
(5) **Structural Modulus**: This focuses on the most precise manufacturing method based on the product’s structure, making component production more efficient.
(6) **Design Modulus**: Different modular systems are used depending on design needs, supporting a wide range of styles and variations.
There are generally three approaches to creating a modulus:
(1) **Based on Product Dimensions**: This aligns with common furniture size standards, which helps with interchangeability and layout in interior spaces. However, it may lead to inconsistencies among components and a large number of specifications.
(2) **Based on Main Panel Sizes**: This reduces component specifications and enhances interchangeability, but it may not align well with the overall cabinet dimensions.
(3) **Based on Both Outer Dimensions and Main Panel Size**: This approach ensures a balanced and practical modular system. The modulus should be scientific, unified, and simple, making it easier for both production and use.
When considering the relationship between furniture scale and ergonomics, and based on standard cabinet material sizes, research, comparison, and optimization are conducted. From a layout perspective, China has established that the basic modulus for cabinets is 50 mm. This means that the three-dimensional dimensions of various cabinet furniture are integer multiples of 50. However, existing national standards for cabinet furniture are not fully aligned with modern panel furniture and are mainly used as references and guidelines.
