To commemorate L’Epée’s 175th anniversary, the brand has partnered with independent watchmaker Vincent Calabrese to unveil two extraordinary double flying tourbillon spherical clocks. These masterpieces are not only a tribute to horological artistry but also a testament to innovation and craftsmanship. One of the pieces is crafted almost entirely from titanium, weighing over 30 kilograms (66 pounds), while the other is made of gold-plated brass and ceramics, tipping the scales at more than 70 kilograms (154 pounds). The base of each spherical clock is adorned with Meissen porcelain, one of Europe's oldest ceramic factories and a symbol of luxury and excellence in porcelain production.
Meissen, known as the "porcelain world," has long been celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship. The iconic "Blue Sword Confrontation" motif, which appears on these clocks, is a historical emblem from the Saxon Duchy, adding a layer of cultural significance to the design.
Each spherical clock features a dual flying tourbillon mechanism that allows for an impressive power reserve of up to 40 days. This remarkable feature is achieved through a special winding device, making it both a mechanical marvel and a functional timepiece. The hour and minute hands not only indicate time but also serve as keys to the tourbillon mechanism on the dial. While gravity can affect the accuracy of such a long power reserve, the team designed a specialized escapement system to ensure precision.
Vincent Calabrese’s design introduces an even more complex escapement system, enhancing the visibility and allure of the flying tourbillon. To make the movement more captivating, all rotating components inside the spherical clock are engineered to rotate counterclockwise, offering a unique visual experience.
Inspired by the concept of hollow design, the clock’s dial features swirling black lines reminiscent of an aviation turbine, adding a dynamic and futuristic touch. This spherical timepiece stands as a true representation of Swiss high-end watchmaking, blending art, engineering, and tradition into one stunning creation.
L’Epée, founded in 1839 by Auguste L’Epée in Saint-Sauveur, France, quickly became renowned for its handcrafted clocks and music boxes. Each piece was meticulously assembled by skilled artisans, establishing the brand as a leader in fine horology.
Vincent Calabrese, often regarded as a visionary among independent watchmakers, was born in Naples, Italy, in 1944. Fluent in Italian and deeply passionate about horology, he moved to Switzerland at the age of 17 and immersed himself in the world of watchmaking. His self-taught expertise led him to become a key figure in the Swiss watch industry.
In 1977, his innovative "spatiales" watch won a gold medal at the Shanghai Salon, capturing attention with its striking design. In 1985, he introduced his own famous flying tourbillon and famously incorporated a quartz crystal into the hour hand, using two curtains to display the passage of time. His fascination with tourbillons inspired him to integrate them into the "Golden Bridge" design, simplifying the structure while maintaining elegance.
Calabrese’s work continues to inspire, with each creation pushing the boundaries of traditional watchmaking. From transparent glass cases to mysterious dials, his passion for innovation remains undiminished, making him a true icon in the world of haute horlogerie.
