The cleaning of dental impression trays has long been a challenging task in clinical practice. This paper aims to address this issue by exploring effective disinfection methods that can simplify the process. On a daily basis, one nurse is responsible for handling 50 to 60 impression trays used by a dozen dentists. These trays must be thoroughly cleaned, dried, or sterilized before they can be reused. Each tray contains over 100 small holes designed to prevent the impression material from falling off. Unfortunately, these tiny holes make the cleaning process extremely difficult. Nurses often have to use probes to remove algae and then brush the holes with copper wire brushes, which is both time-consuming and inefficient, failing to meet the demands of fast-paced clinical settings.
This study compared the effectiveness of three disinfectants: 2% Wanfu Jinan disinfectant, 5% / 84 disinfectant, and 2% glutaraldehyde disinfectant. The goal was to identify a more efficient and practical solution for disinfecting dental trays.
**Materials Used:**
- (1) 2% Wanfu Jinan disinfectant (3L, main component: chlorine, HZ704)
- (2) 5% / 84 disinfectant (3L, main components: chlorine, surfactants, and synergistic stable cosolvents)
- (3) 2% glutaraldehyde disinfectant (3L, main component: high-purity medical glutaraldehyde, AED enhancer)
**Methods:**
A total of 30 clinically used sodium alginate trays were randomly divided into three groups of 10 each. Each group was immersed in one of the three disinfectants for different durations: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 4 hours. After each time interval, the trays were observed and analyzed for the effectiveness of disinfection and the condition of the sodium alginate residue.
The results showed that the sodium alginate on the trays treated with 2% Wanfu Jinan disinfectant gradually softened and degraded after 4 hours. After washing, the trays were clean and free of residue. In contrast, the sodium alginate remained intact on the trays soaked in the other two disinfectants, indicating that those solutions were less effective in breaking down the material.
This study highlights the potential of 2% Wanfu Jinan disinfectant as a more efficient option for tray disinfection, offering a practical solution to the challenges faced in daily clinical routines.
