Dainippon Printing launches aluminized PET film

Dainippon Printing has recently unveiled a groundbreaking innovation in packaging materials: "Biometric VM-PET," an aluminum-plated PET film that features a thin layer of aluminum vapor deposited onto polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film. This material is designed to serve as an intermediate layer in packaging, offering enhanced protection and sustainability. The aluminum vapor deposition process provides excellent barriers against oxygen, moisture, and even sunlight and ultraviolet light from fluorescent sources, which can cause degradation of the packaged contents. However, one challenge with such films is that excessive thickness can lead to cracking. To address this, Dainippon Printing carefully optimized the thickness of the aluminum layer, ensuring a balance between flexibility and strong barrier properties. This careful engineering makes the material suitable for a wide range of packaging applications without compromising performance. In terms of cost, the manufacturing price of Biometric VM-PET is only slightly higher—by a few percentage points—compared to conventional petroleum-based PET films. The company has expressed its intention to lower the price in the future, aiming to bring it closer to the cost level of traditional films while maintaining its environmental benefits. A key feature of Biometric VM-PET is its use of bioethanol derived from sugarcane instead of ethylene glycol, which traditionally comes from petroleum. Ethylene glycol accounts for roughly 30% of the raw materials used in standard PET production. By replacing this with bio-based alternatives, the entire product lifecycle results in approximately a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional petroleum-based PET. This development marks a significant step forward in sustainable packaging solutions, combining functional performance with environmental responsibility. Dainippon Printing’s approach not only supports eco-friendly practices but also demonstrates how innovative material science can contribute to a greener future.
