Hello Fresh Cookalong

During the half-term break, we received an invitation to join a Halloween-themed cooking session with Hello Fresh. I’ve been curious about their subscription boxes ever since I saw how vibrant and appealing they looked online. Plus, I was eager to learn some new culinary tricks from their chef, Patrick Drake. We were sent a family-sized box containing four hearty meals along with a few extra treats for the kids. With the help of my two little "spooky sous chefs," we got ready to dive into some serious cooking. One thing that really stood out to me was just how much food came packed into that single box. It was impressively organized—meat products were stored in a freezer-style bag, ensuring they stayed fresh even if left outside the fridge. Inside, there was enough food for four delicious-sounding meals, complete with straightforward recipe cards. Every item was incredibly fresh, and each had a clear use-by date so we could plan our meals accordingly. The recipe we decided to follow during the virtual cook-along was a Sicilian Caponata paired with Herbed Pork and Garlic Ciabatta. The instructions seemed simple enough, but having a professional chef guide us through each step ensured everything turned out perfectly. [Image description: A family-friendly kitchen setup with colorful ingredients laid out neatly.] The recipe looked easy to follow, but it was fantastic to have a real chef walking us through every detail. This way, we could ensure our meals were not only tasty but also cooked to perfection. My twins absolutely loved this experience. Watching each step unfold and then attempting to mimic it brought them immense joy. They were thrilled when Chef Patrick acknowledged them by name—something that rarely happens during typical YouTube tutorials! We picked up several useful chopping techniques. Personally, I’ve always struggled with chopping veggies, often ending up with uneven cuts, but this experience gave me more confidence. It was equally rewarding to observe how capable my daughters were while helping out. Once the veggies were prepped, we tossed them in olive oil—a moment everyone found particularly enjoyable. The kids were mesmerized by the large sausage we used; it was different from anything we’d worked with before. We removed the sausage meat from its casing and diced it into manageable chunks. With all the ingredients prepared, we let them simmer on the stove. The girls took pride in carefully monitoring the process and even experimented with new flavors like capers, which surprisingly, they adored. Of course, they insisted on taking turns stirring the mixture—it became their favorite part! Despite the overall success, I did encounter a couple of minor hiccups. The vegetables and ciabatta ended up being slightly crispier than intended due to my oven's high temperature. Adjustments will need to be made for future recipes. However, these small setbacks didn’t overshadow the overall satisfaction of learning new techniques such as rubbing garlic onto bread slices. Before we'd even wrapped up filming the session, the kids couldn't wait to dig in. It was a wonderful experience trying something new and having all the necessary ingredients conveniently packaged together. Often, I fall back on familiar dishes simply because sourcing all the ingredients feels too daunting. I also appreciated that Hello Fresh provides precise quantities, eliminating waste entirely. A family box costs £64 and includes enough food for four meals for around 4-5 people, plus free shipping. These boxes would be ideal for those looking to explore new recipes without the hassle of shopping and planning. Engaging your kids in the kitchen can also lead to some unexpected benefits, like teaching them responsibility—my kids even offered to help clean up afterward. The Hello Fresh team loved the photos of my twins so much that they're offering one of their family boxes as a giveaway! *Disclaimer: We received a family box to participate in the cook-along.* Other cooking activities we've tried include "The Patrick Star Game," where my kids explored SpongeBob SquarePants' world in a brand-new adventure. Another fun project was experimenting with bacon-based recipes, which turned out to be both educational and delicious. And let's not forget the importance of maintaining healthy routines, especially when it comes to balancing screen time with hands-on activities like cooking.
