3D printing handheld device: reading patient vital signs in seconds

Friends who have seen Star Trek know that there is a wonderful hand-held medical device in the plot - Medical Tricorder, which doctors use to quickly and accurately diagnose the patient's condition, instead of relying on stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, blood tests, etc. Tricorder can record all of this information in seconds. Sounds like it's out of reach? In fact, not far away, with the help of 3D printing , scientists are turning it into reality.

Recently, engineers at The Johns Hopkins University, under the leadership of Dr. Gene Fridman, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, developed a 3D printing device. The device is capable of reading the patient's primary vital signs in seconds. The device uses a sensory thumb pad and mouthpiece to quickly obtain information about the patient's blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, heart rate, body temperature and more. The thumb pad has a tiny pulse oximeter for measuring blood oxygen levels, while the mouthpiece can measure a variety of other vital signs using sophisticated algorithms and multiple sensors.

The study led to the formation of a company called Multisensor Diagnostics, which the development team named MouthLab. Although still in the prototype stage, many of its components have been printed in 3D, saving the company time and money in the development process.

“We think this will be a “check engine” for humans, it can be used at home or on the spot, and users don’t need special training,” Fridman said. “It can collect data more than ambulances, emergency rooms, doctors. The office gained more during a medical evaluation process."

The current goal of the development team is to allow doctors and patients to simply take the device in front of them, breathe normally, and measure their vital signs within 10 seconds. The product version of the device will display the acquired body data through the built-in display and also send the data to a laptop or cloud platform.

“MouthLab enables people who are not medically trained to make more informed decisions about their health care issues,” Fridman explains. “MouthLab will improve medical care in underdeveloped areas and reduce the number of emergency rooms. It will increase disease. Early treatment effects."
