3D printing helps MiG-29 upgrade to reshape mythology

Since the Vietnam War, the former Soviet MiG series has become a nightmare for Western pilots. In the next two or three decades, the MiG fighter has been in a position to be chased by Western fighters. It was not until 1991 that the Soviet Union collapsed that MiG’s fabulous status began to disintegrate.

But the opponents have not let it go. Thanks to the unification of the two virtues, Western military technicians finally got a glimpse of the most advanced MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter.

In the end, the MiG-29 Fulcrum proved to be a dangerous weapon. Western pilots admire MiG's power and handling, although they are not impressed with their radar and computer systems. Fulcrum works in any weather conditions and harsh electronic interference environments, making it ideal for close-range maneuvers. In addition to this, it has a fast climb speed, a large acceleration, a long detection distance, and the required ground maintenance work is relatively simple.

In view of this factor, there are still a few MiG-29 fighters in service in Poland. Moreover, the Polish military is upgrading it with advanced computers, navigation technology and radar systems. The task is the Polish military aviation plant No. 2 (Wojskowe Zak?ady Lotnicze Nr 2). It is worth mentioning that the engineers and designers of this project used Zortrax's 3D printer as a tool to help them complete many upgrades. The 3D printer was used to develop a variety of parts, according to the project team, said the use of 3D printing technology significantly reduces the time and equipment to upgrade them.

“3D printers enable us to prototype quickly. If we only use traditional methods, even with scanners and software for reverse engineering, the time and cost will still exceed the cost of 3D printing.” Albert Szparga of Military Aviation II said .

According to Zortax, these special components were designed by engineers at the Second Aviation Plant for the MiG-29 and Su-22, and the bodies were machined within a few hours of the completion of their 3D printing prototype. Once the design passes a series of tests, these new parts can be produced in a small batch range. They say that 3D printing technology shortens the time between the design phase and mass production, which means that the project team becomes more efficient in modernizing the various components of the aircraft.

The first MiG-29 fighters were delivered to Poland from 1989 to 1990 and assembled to the Polish Air Force 1st Fighter Air Corps at Mińsk Mazowiecki. Between 1999 and 2004, a number of MiG-23 and MiG-21 retired, and there were only 20 MiG-29 fighters left in Poland. This is the only fighter they can equip their Air Force as of 2008, Poland. It is the largest single-user country of the MiG-29 in NATO. They hope to extend their service life to 2025 by modernizing these fighters.

According to Zortrax, the use of 3D printers allows engineers to tailor frames and related parts to the MiG-29 and Su-22 aircraft to meet NATO standards. These 3D printers are primarily used to model the formation of axles and rudder controls on the aircraft's main landing gear.

Zortrax is headquartered in Olsztyn, Poland, and its 3D printers are currently exported to Asia, Australia and the Americas.
