Go to exercise like a Bhutanese

I often hear people say that football is a game, and so is sports. But it's easier said than done, and I never expected to witness this in Bhutan. The first major sport in Bhutan is archery. As we were driving from the airport to the hotel, every few kilometers we would come across groups of locals gathered together, cheering loudly and shouting numbers. Curious, I got off the bus to check out what was going on, and it turned out to be a local archery gathering. The setting was simple — just a patch of grass by the roadside. The competitors stood at one end, while the target tree was 150 meters away. Before the official match began, music played, and the players even performed a few traditional dances with local girls dressed in traditional attire to entertain the crowd. The audience around them cheered spontaneously. Many elderly people sat cross-legged, watching the young men play with joy, as if reminiscing about their own youth. The winner would be celebrated like a hero, and the prizes were usually practical items, like a Chinese-made Haier washing machine. As for football, it doesn’t seem to be widely developed in Bhutan. It’s hard to imagine a country surrounded by mountains and rivers has no standard natural grass fields. Whether it's a restaurant owner or a hotel staff member, talking about football always brings a smile to their faces. They even mentioned how happy they are to face a strong team like China. That explains why when the Chinese team came to Bhutan, they were warmly welcomed from the airport to the hotel. To the kind and simple Bhutanese, there's no concept of "opponent" — you're a guest, a friend, and even international matches are treated with respect and warmth. I've grown used to the harshness of competitive sports and the intensity of professional games. But in Bhutan, a small country where sports are more about fun than competition, I discovered a different kind of spirit. Is it truly simple and enjoyable to play sports like the Bhutanese do?
