Go to exercise like a Bhutanese

I often hear people say that football is a game, and so is sports. But it's easier said than done, and I never expected to witness such a genuine and joyful approach to sports in Bhutan.
The most popular sport in Bhutan is archery. On the way from the airport to my hotel, I kept spotting groups of locals gathering by the roadside, cheering loudly and shouting numbers. Curious, I got off the bus to check out what was going on, and it turned out to be a traditional "archery festival."
The setting was simple—just a patch of grass by the road. Competitors stood at one end, while the target tree was 150 meters away. Before the competition started, music played, and the players performed a few traditional dances with local girls dressed in colorful costumes, bringing energy and excitement to the crowd.
The audience, mostly locals, gathered around, cheering enthusiastically. Many elderly people sat cross-legged, watching the young men compete with smiles on their faces, as if reminiscing about their own youth. The winner was celebrated like a hero, and the prizes were usually practical items, like a Chinese-made Haier washing machine.
As for football, it doesn’t seem to have developed much in Bhutan. It’s hard to imagine a country surrounded by mountains and green landscapes without a single natural grass field. Whether it was a restaurant owner or a hotel waiter, everyone I spoke to smiled when talking about football. They even said they were happy just to play against a strong team like China. That’s why when the Chinese team came to Bhutan, they were welcomed with VIP treatment from the airport to the hotel.
To the Bhutanese, there's no concept of an "opponent." To them, you're a guest, a friend, and not someone to be feared—even in international matches. It was refreshing to see such a warm and welcoming attitude toward sports.
I'm used to the intensity and competitiveness of professional sports, but in Bhutan, a small country where sports are more about joy than winning, I discovered a different kind of spirit. Is this what it means to enjoy sports like the Bhutanese? It feels simple, pure, and truly meaningful.
