Dmitry Rogozhkin with Surreal Art
Today we introduce you to Dmitry Rogozhkin, a Russian artist whose work is deeply rooted in the world of surrealism. Born and raised in Malmyzh, a small town in Russia, he never had formal artistic training but always felt a strong connection to drawing. His journey into surreal art began as an exploration of his imagination, leading him to create unique and thought-provoking pieces.
His passion for creativity eventually led him to study architecture at university, where he continued to explore his artistic side. This blend of design and artistry helped shape his perspective and inspired his future career in photography.
In 2011, Dmitry bought his first camera, a Canon PowerShot 20x, which cost him $250. It was a significant investment for him, but it opened up a new way of expressing himself. Over time, he transitioned to a Canon 7D, which became a key tool in his creative process. He found that photography allowed him to capture moments and emotions in a way that drawing or painting couldn’t. “An artist is a state of mind,†he says, “whether you’re using a camera or a brush, it doesn’t matter.â€
One of his favorite techniques is incorporating one image within another, creating layers of meaning and depth. He believes that planning is essential—starting with 2-3 key frames and then letting the rest evolve through improvisation. He encourages photographers to seek out new perspectives and avoid repeating the same locations and angles. This approach helps keep the creative process fresh and engaging.
When it comes to post-processing, Dmitry spends a lot of time refining his images. He believes that the atmosphere of a photo is just as important as the subject itself. “I want the audience to feel something without realizing it,†he explains. While not every image achieves this, he strives to make each one resonate emotionally.
Beyond technical skills, he emphasizes the importance of observation. “Look at the sunset, for example. Why is it so beautiful? Because of the limited color palette—yellow, red, sometimes purple. It’s the simplicity that makes it powerful. Repetitive elements can also create a sense of harmony, like a pattern on a wallpaper.â€
