Dmitry Rogozhkin with Surreal Art

Today we're excited to introduce you to Dmitry Rogozhkin, an artist whose work blends surrealism with a unique visual language. Born and raised in Malmyzh, Russia, he didn't have formal artistic training but always had a passion for drawing. His journey into the world of art was shaped by his early interest in surrealism, which continues to influence his creative process.

Later, this passion led him to study architecture at university, where he found new ways to express himself through photography. In 2011, he bought his first camera, a Canon PowerShot 20x, which marked the beginning of a new chapter in his artistic journey.

Over time, photography became his preferred medium for self-expression. “It was more convenient than drawing or painting,” he says. “An artist is a state of mind, and it doesn’t matter if you’re using a camera or a brush.” He’s known for incorporating images within images, creating layered and thought-provoking compositions.

When planning a shoot, he recommends starting with a few key frames and then allowing room for improvisation. “Look for new perspectives and don’t stick to the same locations or angles,” he advises. This approach helps maintain creativity and keeps the work fresh.

He also emphasizes the importance of analyzing your surroundings. “For example, a sunset is beautiful because of the limited color palette—yellow, red, sometimes purple. It’s about simplicity and repetition, which creates a powerful visual effect.”

“I spend a lot of time on each photo, both in shooting and post-processing,” he explains. “Photoshop is essential for me to create the atmosphere I want. My goal is to make the audience feel something without them realizing how it was done.”
