Qingdao packaging characteristics of blue packaging out of the local customs

When you think of Qingdao specialties, what comes to mind? Are these "seafood packages" packed in blue plastic bags? Recently, I came across a popular specialty shop that has attracted many tourists. Its unique packaging is closely tied to its success. The packaging here truly embodies the spirit of Qingdao. Compared to other shops, this store named “A Little Sister” stands out with its fresh and refined style—blue-green walls, lattice doors, European-style murals, and chandeliers give it a youthful and literary vibe. Tourists passing by can't help but glance inside curiously, whether they plan to buy or not. Many take photos, seeking a new look or capturing the moment. Indeed, the store's decor isn't the only eye-catching element. The specialties it sells are also visually appealing. It doesn't offer rare items, just squid, cuttlefish, Laoshan tea, sorghum, and more. However, the packaging of each item is distinctive. For example, fish fillet boxes feature hand-painted beaches and shells, scallop cans depict sea views and famous Qingdao landmarks like Badaguan, and Laoshan tea cans are marked with images of Qingdao churches. After checking the products, I noticed that except for paper boxes, everything is in tin cans, and no product is sold in plastic bags. Although these items are processed by different companies, all outer packaging shares a similar style and features a certain small mark. Xiao Liu, an undergraduate from Beijing, shared that when she visits Qingdao, she always wants to bring back some local specialties. But after visiting several stores and malls, she had no desire to buy anything. “It’s not great. Those big red and blue plastic packages look too cheap, like buying from a wholesale market.” In Xiao Liu's opinion, the atmosphere on the streets of Qingdao feels more foreign and literary, and the packaging of “A Little Sister” aligns with this image. “I especially like those painted tin cans. They feel like Qingdao, and it’s also nice to bring them back as souvenirs,” she said. The pursuit of quality and novelty isn’t bad money. Of course, the prices in this store aren’t cheap. A 100g squid box costs 25 yuan, which is two to three times more expensive than the 40-50 yuan per 500g found elsewhere. Yet, I still saw many tourists buying ten boxes at a time. Ms. Yang from Jiangxi said she could accept this price because she buys it as a gift rather than ordinary food. She believes that if it's considered regular food, there's no need to buy it from Qingdao, as supermarkets nationwide sell squid. But as a gift, the food itself doesn’t have to be large; it allows friends to taste something new. However, the packaging must be elegant, and that’s why she thinks the price is acceptable. “Buying twenty small gifts for friends, I think this price is worth it.” Ms. Liang, a local from Qingdao, mentioned that locals might suspect these products are fake, but the target customers are foreigners. Since they're traveling, they’re interested in something unique and aren’t afraid to spend money. Online sales can't be separated from eye-catching packaging. Packaging and the product are like “twins.” They are equally important and complement each other. Good packaging creates a direct connection with the audience, allowing the product to resonate immediately. Poor design may create a negative impression, while good design fosters a positive one. Xiaomiao and Xiaowang believe that consumers can be categorized into loyal, discount-seeking, impulsive, demand-driven, and loitering types. Most people who buy specialty products fall into the latter three categories. Impulsive buyers don’t have a specific list and often make purchases based on feelings. Demand-driven buyers consider quality, price, and grade carefully. Loitering buyers don’t have a clear intention but seek new experiences. For these types, visually appealing and high-quality packaging is crucial. Creative packaging plays a vital role in enhancing the appeal of Qingdao's seafood products.
