Qingdao packaging characteristics of blue packaging out of the local customs

When you think of Qingdao specialties, what comes to mind? Are these "seafood packages" wrapped in blue plastic bags? Recently, I came across a popular specialty shop that has attracted many tourists. The unique packaging of its products plays a big role in this appeal.
The packaging here is "very Qingdao."
Compared to other shops, this store called “A Little Sister†stands out with a fresh and elegant style—blue-green walls, lattice doors, European-style murals, and chandeliers. It feels like a youthful literary space. Tourists can't help but glance inside curiously, whether they plan to buy or not. Many visitors take photos or simply enjoy the new look.
Indeed, besides the decor, the products themselves are also eye-catching. They don’t offer rare items—just squid, cuttlefish, Laoshan tea, sorghum, and similar goods—but the packaging is distinctive. For example, fish fillet boxes feature hand-painted beaches and shells, scallop tins depict sea views and famous Qingdao landmarks like Badaguan, and Laoshan tea cans are decorated with stamps of Qingdao’s churches. After checking, I noticed that except for paper boxes, everything is in tin cans, and no product is packed in plastic bags. Although these products come from different food companies, all their outer packaging shares a similar style and carries a certain signature mark.
Xiao Liu, an undergraduate from Beijing, mentioned that when she visits Qingdao, she always wants to buy some local specialties. However, after visiting several small stores and malls, she had no desire to purchase anything. She said, “It's not worth it. Those big red and blue plastic packages look too low-end, just like buying from a wholesale market.â€
In Xiao Liu’s opinion, the feeling of Qingdao is more “foreign†and literary, and the packaging of “A Little Sister†matches this style. “I especially like those painted tin cans. It feels like Qingdao, and it’s also nice to bring them back as gifts,†she added.
The pursuit of quality and novelty isn’t bad money.
Of course, the prices in this store aren’t cheap. A 100g squid box costs 25 yuan, which is two or three times more expensive than the 40 yuan/500g price elsewhere. Yet, I still saw many tourists buying ten boxes at a time.
Ms. Yang from Jiangxi said she could accept this price because she buys it as a gift rather than regular food. She believes that if it's just for consumption, there's no need to buy it in Qingdao since supermarkets nationwide sell squid. But as a gift, the quantity doesn’t matter; friends can taste it early, and the packaging must be elegant and refined. “Twenty small gifts for friends, I think this price is acceptable,†she said.
Ms. Liang, a Qingdao local who was out for a walk at night, told reporters that locals might suspect these products are fake, but the target customers are foreigners. Since they’re traveling, they seek something interesting and novel, and they’re not afraid to spend money.
Online sales can’t be separated from eye-catching packaging. Packaging and products are like “twins.â€
In Xiaomiao and Xiaowang’s view, many people see packaging as just a container or accessory, but in reality, the product and packaging should be seen as “twin children.†They are equally important and complement each other. Good packaging creates a direct connection with the audience, allowing the product to connect with consumers right away. Poor design may create a negative impression, while good design creates a positive one.
These two young people analyzed that consumers can be divided into loyal, discount-seeking, impulsive, demand-oriented, and loitering types. Most buyers of specialty products fall into the latter three categories. Impulsive consumers don’t have a specific list and often buy based on a “feeling.†Demand-oriented consumers have clear intentions and consider quality, price, and grade. Loitering consumers don’t have a clear desire to buy but want new experiences. For these groups, visually pleasing and high-quality packaging is crucial. Creative packaging is very important for Qingdao’s seafood products.
