Mahogany furniture lecture held: revealing the trend of the mahogany market

Mahogany Furniture Lecture Unveils Market Trends

As a collectible, the trend of mahogany furniture has always been closely tied to the broader economic environment and consumer behavior. On Sunday, the Yangzi Evening News Redwood Fan Club hosted an informative lecture featuring Professor Xu Kuizhen, Director of the Institute of Wood Science at Nanjing Forestry University, and Dr. Wu Bian, Deputy Secretary General of the Hongmu Branch of the China Forest Industry Association. The session provided valuable insights into the value analysis of different mahogany materials. Following the event, the Nanjing Redwood Tasting Center and Mingkexuan Redwood distributed a "Redwood Furniture Cost White Paper" to members, offering personalized guidance for enthusiasts interested in mahogany furniture.

The reporter learned that since June last year, the mahogany furniture market has entered a period of uncertainty. One of the main factors influencing prices is the hype around raw logs. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has listed seven of the 33 redwood species under controlled trade, significantly increasing the barriers to entry. This regulation directly contributed to a sharp rise in timber prices. For example, Laos red rosewood, a commonly used material, nearly doubled in value, reaching up to 300,000 yuan per ton. Meanwhile, Burmese huanghuali, often considered an alternative, also quadrupled in price.

The rapid increase in wood prices has directly impacted the cost of finished products. Many mahogany traders have started displaying furniture at home, with board prices doubling. “In the short term, the market hasn’t had time to adjust, and this creates hidden risks for a rational consumer market,” said Dr. Wu. He added that the control of raw material sources and reduced exports have made the experience of buying mahogany furniture similar to that of purchasing jade. In fact, like jade, mahogany furniture now finds itself in a strange situation where “flour is more expensive than bread.”

Dr. Wu warned that the current mahogany furniture industry is a mix of genuine and fake products. Those without professional knowledge are advised to seek expert advice. They can also follow the activities of the Yangzi Evening News to learn about wood identification and gain the ability to assess the quality and value of mahogany furniture. Additionally, members of the newspaper club will have access to opportunities to purchase “naked price” branded furniture. This gives enthusiasts a chance to start their journey into the world of mahogany with confidence and informed choices.
