[Chinese Packaging News] To save time during lunch breaks, many office workers opt to order takeout or buy pre-packaged meals to bring home. The food containers used for these meals vary greatly in quality, from the outer design to the handles. Some paper bowls become deformed, and some even leak. Others emit a strong plastic smell when opened, which can negatively affect customers' overall impression of the restaurant. Recently, a reporter interviewed several people and found that more businesses are now using PP plastic lunch boxes, while the market still has a portion of disposable containers without any clear product labels.
One end is deformed — this paper bowl isn’t suitable for use.
Xiao Guo, an office worker, often buys fast food from the supermarket's deli section. He noticed that the quality of disposable food containers varies a lot. Some are paper bowls, others transparent plastic boxes, and occasionally white plastic ones. He usually doesn't cook at home, so he eats out for all three meals. Breakfast and dinner are usually taken from small shops or breakfast stalls. However, with the summer heat, he rarely goes out for lunch anymore. Instead, he asks colleagues to bring food to the office or orders delivery. After lunch, he brings back various disposable meal boxes. "The large paper bowls I use don’t leak until I finish eating," he said. When talking about the quality of these lunch boxes, Xiao Guo mentioned that he has observed many of them lack the required three labels. But the containers used in regular fast food restaurants tend to be of better quality.
At noon, he’s too lazy to go out, so he orders takeout. These takeout lunch boxes are usually fragile and soft, not very appealing in terms of quality. As summer approaches, office worker Kobayashi and his colleagues start to feel more “lazy.†At 11 a.m., everyone discusses what to eat for lunch and orders together. Kobayashi shared his experience, saying that the quality of paper bowls used for noodles, rice noodles, and hot pot is relatively poor. One end is deformed, and the quality of fast food delivery boxes is inconsistent. Some even have a noticeable plastic odor when opened. “For example, hot pot dishes are first put into plastic bags and then placed into paper bowls. But recently, we noticed that a rice noodle shop switched to a sealed plastic bowl instead of a paper one. It feels slightly better and has less of an odor,†he added.
Disposable lunch box prices vary, and so does their quality and health protection.
On June 19th, the reporter visited the Caoqiaokou Wholesale Market in Jining City and saw takeout meal boxes being sold in several wholesale shops near the southern entrance of the market. These lunch boxes were packed in transparent plastic bags with no labeling on them. The 50-piece packs were not individually wrapped and were simply stacked on the shelves. According to the shop owner, many snack bars use these containers. Prices range from 0.2 yuan to 1 yuan per unit, with sizes typically sold in 50-packs. Most of them are disposable PP lunch boxes. The PP boxes are stamped with information on the bottom and lid, but the price remains the same for the same size. The reporter picked up a 0.2-yuan lunch box and compared it with a 0.8-yuan one. The thinner 0.2-yuan box felt cheap, while the 0.8-yuan one was thicker and had printed details like "microwave safe" and "temperature 125°C."
"If you want good quality, go for 1 yuan. If you want cheaper, go for foam boxes, just 0.1 yuan each," said a shop owner. He also mentioned that although the ban on disposable foam plastic lunch boxes was lifted last May, they are still only 0.1 yuan cheaper. However, due to their brittle material, they break easily and are rarely purchased by fast food shops, so they’re stored in warehouses. "Now, more people are buying plastic or pulp lunch boxes, which look much more upscale," the owner said. Many snack bars and fast food restaurants now choose plastic lunch boxes, and some even charge 2 yuan for the container. In addition to PP boxes, pulp lunch boxes are also popular. Made from recycled paper pulp and lined with a thin film inside to prevent water leakage, they are very affordable at 0.15 yuan each. They are widely used in food stores selling soups, rice noodles, hot pot, and dumplings in urban areas.
