The Top 10 Stadiums in the World: A Global Perspective
Date: April 17, 2015
Recently, Football Daily, a UK-based football website, released a list of the top 10 stadiums based on Google Maps. The list features iconic venues such as Wembley Stadium, Soccer City Stadium, Camp Nou, and Aztec Stadium. These structures not only serve as home grounds for legendary teams but also host major international events, making them cultural and sporting landmarks.
Wembley Stadium, located in London, is the home of the England national team and has been the stage for numerous high-profile matches. Originally built in 1923, it was rebuilt in 2007 at a cost of £780 million. With a capacity of 90,000, it features a retractable roof and is considered the largest covered stadium in the world. It has witnessed historic moments, including England’s 1966 World Cup victory, and continues to be a symbol of British football.
Soccer City Stadium, now known as FNB Stadium, is ranked sixth on the list. Though its name may not ring a bell for everyone, it gained global attention during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Hosted in South Africa, the stadium was expanded to hold nearly 95,000 spectators. Mandela made a final public appearance here during the 2010 closing ceremony, and the venue later became a site for his memorial service in 2013.
Camp Nou, located in Barcelona, is Europe’s largest stadium and ranks fifth. Since its opening in 1957, it has hosted countless memorable matches for FC Barcelona. Over the years, its capacity has fluctuated due to safety regulations, eventually settling at around 99,000. Beyond football, the stadium offers unique experiences, like weddings with star appearances from Barcelona’s legends.
Aztec Stadium in Mexico City, which ranks fourth, was completed in 1966 and has a capacity of 105,000. It is the only stadium to have hosted two FIFA World Cup finals, including the legendary 1970 match where Pelé bid farewell and Brazil defeated Italy 4-1. In 1986, Maradona’s "Hand of God" goal against England took place here, cementing its legacy in football history.
Interestingly, while Europe and the Americas are often associated with iconic stadiums, Asia and Africa have produced some of the largest in recent years. In addition to Soccer City, six stadiums from the Asia-Africa region made the list, with Asia claiming the top three spots.
One of these is the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt, which can hold 86,000 people. Built in 2007, it is the largest stadium in Egypt and the second-largest in Africa. What makes it unique is that all construction work was carried out by the Egyptian Armed Forces.
Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is another standout. Built for the 1998 Commonwealth Games, it can seat 110,000 spectators and has hosted major tournaments like the 2007 Asian Cup. Its modern design reflects Malaysia’s growing role in international sports.
In India, Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, also known as the Yuva Bharati Krirangana, is the second-largest stadium in the world, with a capacity of 120,000. It is the heart of Indian football, hosting the Calcutta Derby and being the home ground for teams like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
Finally, the largest stadium in the world is located in Pyongyang, North Korea. Known as May Day Stadium, it was completed in 1989 and can accommodate 150,000 spectators. With a total area of over 207,000 square meters, it serves as a multi-purpose venue for sports and cultural events. It has hosted numerous significant matches and remains a symbol of North Korea’s sporting ambition.
