Thermal transfer paper and ink requirements

Most multi-purpose thermosetting inks can be made into better quality cold peeling effect. If you want to make a transfer product that can be hot-peeled and cold-peeled, you need to add a thermal separation additive to the ordinary thermosetting ink, or buy a special ink for thermal peeling. Many ink companies have produced ordinary multi-purpose screen inks that can be used for hot and cold stripping transfer, but in fact they are all the same.

Ink with lower transparency (used in dark shirts) is not very good for making transfers, because this ink has higher density and relatively poor stretching force. Do not print polyester shirts with poor transparency and low permeability inks. Because when the transfer paper is stored for a long time, the anti-permeation agent prevents the transfer pattern from being smoothly released from the paper. Most ink companies produce transfer inks with very low transparency. It is very important to use high-deposition inks for printing. Therefore, it is best not to dilute when printing, but to use the ink in the package directly. If the ink is too viscous (this is often the case with thermoset inks), add a little thinner to it so that the ink is easy to use. It is important not to cure it completely during transfer. I will talk about this in the "How to Transfer" section.

Paper

Special paper is required for thermal transfer. Most companies mainly engaged in screen printing provide such paper, which has strong stability and is not easy to shrink after being dried by a dryer. The stability of a good transfer paper is very high, and the ink on it will not penetrate. This kind of paper is called high-quality "impervious paper". Suppliers often pack the following types of paper with other proprietary names:

T-75 was widely used more than 20 years ago. It is very stable and has a good release, and is very suitable for cold peeling transfer. It can be used as a raw material for cold peeling and hot separation. If you want a dual-use transfer product, it is the best choice.

The density of T-55 paper is slightly higher than that of T-75, which is specially used for thermal separation transfer. Because the plasticizer content of thermally separated varieties is relatively high, if T-75 is used as the raw material, the shelf life will be shortened. Although some businesses recommend that T-55 can be used as the raw material for both transfers, you will find that when the cold peel method is used, the ink on the T-55 will not be completely separated.

There are many other professional papers, but I personally think that the above two papers have always been the main industry raw materials.

Wire mesh

Because the ink film will separate during transfer, it is necessary to print a thick layer of ink. This can be done by using a coarse-mesh screen with a thick template device. It is recommended to use 74T to 86T single fiber silk screen for monochrome printing, and 110T to 156 (45-61 cm) for more complex printing. If a finer screen is used, the deposited ink will be insufficient. (This article focuses on basic pattern design and does not involve the transfer of the four-color plate-making method.) The template should have sufficient thickness. For clear outline edges and thick templates, it is best to use capillary straight hole film. The thickness of the film should be at least 40 microns, and it is better if it is 70-80 microns. Expose the silk screen into a mirror image (reverse reading), if you want to maintain its accuracy, you need to use it as a reverse photosensitive plastic surface to retake the positive film.

Art work

The artwork used for thermal separation and transfer should avoid decorating too many heavy colors (in addition, a black is used to color the outline), the black outline will be separated during the transfer (same as the rest of the colors), and will lose opacity . The bottom color can be shown through the black surface. Try not to arrange art patterns too tightly, and leave room for paper shrinkage. For printing some more detailed small images, try to mount the entire pattern on a pure white or pure transparent layer.
