In March of this year, a Japanese company named exiii introduced an impressive 3D-printed bionic myoelectric prosthesis that can be controlled via a smartphone. This groundbreaking device delivers performance on par with high-end prosthetics that typically cost tens of thousands of dollars, yet it comes at a remarkably low price of under $300.  Unlike traditional prosthetic designs, exiii combines a smartphone as its control unit and 3D-printed components as its hardware. This innovative approach has pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in affordable prosthetics. Recently, the company unveiled its most advanced creation yet: the HACKberry, a highly capable 3D-printed bionic hand. Alongside the release, they also made the design files open source.  According to exiii, the goal of sharing the HACKberry design is to encourage global participation from hobbyists and developers. By opening up the project, they hope to accelerate improvements and make the prosthetic even more powerful over time.  HACKberry brings several exciting new features to the table. It includes a highly flexible wrist that allows for more natural movement, a smaller palm designed to better fit women's hands, and compatibility with digital camera batteries for extended use. The hand can perform actions like picking up objects, grasping, and pinching. For example, it can easily pick up a spoon or fork, or even pinch a leaf between its fingers, as shown in one of the images.
