Our fantastic antique dealer, the Vintage Compact Shop, recently had their collection of vintage powder bowls showcased on a popular TV show. One particular piece stood out and was selected for display—a beautiful vanity crafted by the esteemed British company, A. S. Brown & Co. Manufacturing Ltd. ASB was commissioned by renowned shipping lines like the P&O Line to create special gifts for their first-class passengers. Often, these vanities came adorned with the shipping line's logo on the lid, making them cherished mementos of luxurious voyages—perhaps even once-in-a-lifetime experiences. When shopping at the Vintage Compact Shop, you’ll find a curated selection of antique and vintage dressing tables, ideal for storing your own collection of classic beauty products. Each piece carries its own story, just waiting to be discovered. One of the powder bowls in this collection came with a beautifully printed gift card that read: "With the Compliments of the Chairman and Managing Directors at the P. & O. S. N. Company" The Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Company, originally established in the Iberian Peninsula, made waves in 1844 as the first company globally to offer passenger cruises. Over time, they grew into a dominant force in maritime travel, acquiring other operators and building increasingly faster and more opulent ships destined for exotic locales worldwide. The powder bowl itself features the iconic P&O coat of arms, inscribed with the Latin phrase "Quis nos separabit" (Who will separate us). This enchanting emblem showcases a lion, an elephant, a dragon, and a kangaroo—symbols representing the company’s extensive global reach across Britain, India, China, and Australia. In a memorable episode of "Killing Eve," Konstantin meticulously searched through Villanelle’s luggage to ensure she wasn’t packing any weapons. As he rummaged through her belongings, he opened one of these vintage powder bowls and discovered something unexpected—razor wire cleverly concealed inside. It was a subtle yet effective nod to Villanelle’s resourcefulness and unpredictable nature.
