U.S. Success with Citrus Plastics

Cornell University recently developed a new technology that uses citrus and carbon dioxide as the main raw materials for plastics.

Orange peel contains 95% of lemon olein. According to reports, when it is used to make plastics, it is first produced by the oxidation of limonene to form limonene olein oxides, and then the catalysts developed by Cornell University are used to combine limonene olein oxides and carbon dioxide, and the resulting products are carbonated lemon oil. Fine polymers have many properties of polystyrene. It is understood that the sources of the materials used in this process are stable and abundant, and they can be regenerated, which not only helps to save oil resources, but also uses carbon dioxide in production to help reduce the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere and reduce the greenhouse effect.
