Scientists develop new biofuel cell prototypes with high efficiency of nearly 100%

According to foreign media reports, researchers have been constantly developing various bio-batteries that can generate electricity through biological processes, but most bio-batteries are unable to produce a lot of energy. Researchers at the Virginia Tech recently developed a prototype of a bio-battery that is lighter and more powerful than batteries in electronic devices such as mobile phones.

The body converts sugar into energy through a metabolic process, which is breaking down sugar into carbon dioxide and water. This bio-battery can also generate energy by capturing the electrons generated during the decomposition of sugar. Since bio batteries use biological materials, they are renewable and non-toxic, which makes them promising alternatives to traditional batteries.

Researchers Percival Zhang and Zhiguang Zhu of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute have designed this new type of bio-battery, which can directly convert sugar into energy, which means that its output far exceeds the previous bio-battery, and even exceeds the ordinary lithium ion battery.

This new bio-battery relies on enzyme proteins to achieve such high efficiency. It can extract nearly 100% of the energy contained in sugar molecules and produce carbon dioxide and water. The energy extracted by the previous bio-battery is only one-sixth.

Although this cycle can completely convert sugar into energy, it uses fewer enzymes than the human body. Shelley Minteer, a biobattery expert at the University of Utah, said: "It is very important to extract all the electrons with the least amount of enzyme protein. I think this is a great metabolic pathway."

Although the new bio-battery system means a major breakthrough in this field, it still needs to overcome many obstacles. Zhiguang Zhu explained: "So far we are still facing some challenges. The current life of this battery is still too short, and it can not be recharged."
