Before heading out on a field trip, check that the analysis membrane is unused and properly stored, ensuring it remains clean. Also verify that there is enough solvent available and that the flashlight is functional. Place a sample bottle in the box as a waste collection container and label it clearly. This bottle will be used to collect the waste fluid that flushes the hose before taking an actual oil sample from the tank. Include a comparison sample and the operating instructions for oil contamination levels inside the box, placed securely in the foam padding behind the main components.
To obtain an accurate oil sample, take it while the system is at its normal operating temperature—either while it’s running or immediately after it has been turned off. Before opening the sampling valve, wipe the outside of the valve to remove any dirt. Then, open the valve and let the fluid flow through it into the waste container or back into the tank. This step ensures that any residual material in the valve is flushed out before collecting the actual sample. Carefully collect the liquid in a clean, labeled bottle, seal it tightly, and close the sampling valve. Avoid adjusting the valve while filling the sample to prevent contamination or loss of sample integrity.
When sampling from a fuel tank or sump, first insert one end of the hose into the vacuum pump’s protruding port. Push the hose all the way down until it reaches the bottom of the vacuum pump, then secure the end cap by turning it clockwise. Next, screw the sample bottle onto the vacuum pump and insert the other end of the hose into the oil. Start the vacuum pump and allow it to draw the oil into the bottle. Once the bottle is about two-thirds full, unscrew it from the pump and pour the collected oil into the bottle. Then, attach the second sampling bottle to the vacuum pump and repeat the process to collect a second sample. Remove the cap from the second sample bottle once it is filled.
