Russian scientists invent a new method of using microorganisms to purify oil-contaminated soil
Researchers at the Perm State University of Science and Technology in Russia have invented a new method for purifying oil-contaminated soil using Rhodococcus bacteria. In Perm region, due to the large amount of oil extraction, the soil in some areas is very polluted, and the groundwater system is also seriously threatened. After years of research, scientists have discovered that Rhodococcus bacteria (Rhodococcus) have very good degradation of all types of petroleum hydrocarbons (from gaseous to solid), they can even decompose thick heavy oil into surface-active substance.
The researchers put the bacteria into oil-contaminated areas. After a period of time, the oil pollution was decomposed into carbon dioxide gas and water, and then the environmental system began a self-cleaning process. However, in cold regions, the reproduction of this bacterium is greatly affected and new bacteria need to be continuously introduced. After unremitting efforts, the researchers invented a method to maintain the activity of bacterial preparations. Now, in regions with harsh climates, it has become a reality to use bacteria to purify contaminated soil.
